Education outside the classroom
It is truly amazing how many persons have non-Hodgkins lymphoma. In fact, NHL may be the malignancy in the United States that is increasing at the fastest rate.
A few days ago I greeted one of my neighbors who happened to be standing with another person. My neighbor introduced me to his friend and then enquired of my lymphoma status. The neighbors friend immediately showed keen interest in asking of my diagnosis and treatment. When I gently responded and asked why he was so inquisitive, he told me that he, himself, had been treated for NHL two years earlier.
Immediately, I went into my "education mode" and told him of my wonderful response to radioimmunotherapy (RIT)for stage IV NHL. While wishing him well, I suggested that he clearly remember RIT as an important and efficacious therapy.
We lymphoma patients must not only support one another in raising spirits, but we must continually inform and educate one another.
